A friend of mine told me a surprising story the other day. He asked a class of 6th graders if they knew what The Golden Rule was. Only one kid, after some prodding, knew "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Only one. The rest of the class had a blank stare.. When the boy who got the answer was leaving the classroom, my friend overheard him quietly say, "I felt smart being the only one who knew the answer."
OK, maybe we don't have to teach our children The Golden Rule. After all, we already encourage them to share…be nice…don't hit…be kind and considerate…and so on. Some kids will remember all those lessons...and some won't.
But instead of teaching lots of different lessons on how to be a good person...why not just teach The Golden Rule. It's easy to remember and it is a very personal thing. Every time you interact with others you ask yourself, “Would I like that?”
Another interesting fact about The Golden Rule is every major religion on
the planet has a version of The Golden Rule in its teachings. Did you
know that?
With this in mind, my Bobby's Buddies community service today is to first, startle you and then encourage you to help our kids learn a simple rule to guide their behavior.
In the next few days do this, take a survey. Ask kids if they know The Golden Rule. Write down how many you ask and how many know the rule. This is the startling part because like my friend and the 6th graders he asked, not many will.
Next, for all of September, I want you to teach The Golden Rule to as many kids as possible. I have a link on my Bobbies Buddies.org web site to a terrific Golden Rule graphic that shows each major religion and how they express this good-will-to-all sentiment.
Then at the end of September, send me an email and tell me your story. I know it will be a fascinating...and rewarding experience for you…so just imagine what it will do for the kids.
This past week I have been mulling over in my mind what I said to you about adding some “fun” risk to your daily diet of humdru
m by helping others. And YES…I do listen to myself talk and often take my own advice.
Well, as luck would have it, The United Way of
There are over 80 Days of Caring projects you can choose from to pump-up the fun risk in your life. Now if you can’t find one project that interests you in this huge list of helpful thing to do for your community I suggest you get someone to check your pulse.
If you don’t know, United Way’s Days of Caring is an annual event that connects volunteers with local nonprofit to help complete important … and necessary projects that may not otherwise get done…like paint a mural … or build a playground … or read to preschoolers … or clean up a senior’s yard. Thing that will make a difference in a bunch of lives.
To help make a difference in your life and your family’s life, too, I have listed the link to all of the Day of Caring projects from which you can choose. When you open the link, go to the bottom of the page to find the projects.
The United Way Days of Caring is only two days… Saturday, September 11th … and Wednesday, September 15th. What could it hurt if you took a little risk and did something a bit out of the ordinary for you. I can tell you this, it won’t hurt … but helping other in need will help you have more fun for the rest of your life.
Check out Days of Caring, select a project and call to volunteer. Then send me an email and tell me how much fun risk is.

Make Your Life Interesting
Volunteer and Grow Old With Few Regrets Psychologists say it is the “fear of failure” that holds people in their seats. That doesn’t make any sense to me because if you haven’t done anything risky and failed…where does the fear come from? Remember the story a week ago about the JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater who suddenly just had it with his job and slid down the emergency slide—a beer in each hand…that’s my favorite part—leaving behind a few choice words for one of his demanding passengers. Now there’s some risk taking. What’s interesting about this story is Steven may have left a downer job but slid right into hosting How I Quit My Job, a TV reality show. Whether he gets the show or not, years from now he still has a great story to tell his buddies and friends. You may like the two beers part, too and the slide part, but I know quitting your job is completely out of the question even though you might hate it. That’s scary, right? Well then how about starting small? Here’s my After a few months of volunteering and not failing or fearing anything, you can think about bailing on that stinking job. You could even end up on Steven’s TV reality show. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Take a small risk…do some helping out … and start creating those great stories for your golden years…you won’t regret it. Contact me at Bobbysbuddies.org or MIXfm and tell me about how you are taking a risk to change our community.
Survey after survey of senior citizens on what they regret most in their lives elicits the same response nearly every time. They regret they didn’t take any risks. Most often this risk aversion is excused by the life limiting statement: “I don’t like change.”

You will be surprised at how exhilarating taking a small risk is. And besides you will not only be helping yourself, you will be helping someone in need, too.
